The Entry Level HR Role: No Entry?

It seems like newly graduated HR graduates are flooding the market. Is there a future, or should they all already start thinking about changing careers?
Boulevard of Broken Dreams?
This article is based upon a recent hiring process experience. The job title was HR Coordinator, and the number of applicants was in the hundreds. The job ad was specifically targeting applicants who had recently graduated or graduated in the past two to three years. Of the applicants who had graduated in the past few years there were almost none who had gained any relevant work experience after graduation.
This was not a one-off instance, another employer confirms that they are being overwhelmed by applicants to HR positions (1).
Let's use the PC Model to test the resistance of junior HR positions to AI.
THE PC Model™ Resistance Rating
No licenses required and no legal barriers to enter the HR profession. Using AI is also cheaper than hiring.
This is the tricky part. Senior HR positions needs to have a human connection. However, AI can now screen resumes, schedule interviews, handle basic employee questions and make drafts for employee handbooks. Thus making the junior HR person, almost, obsolete.
On the flip side, junior HR staff can still provide value in areas such as onboarding new employees and provide a human first point of contact where employees are reluctant to use chatbots.
Normally, juniors don't sign off on big ethical decisions, but juniors can give input, flag edge cases, and help test and improve the AI tools used in HR processes.
As very little human connection is needed, most of the tasks of a junior HR can be done remotely. However, some companies still prefer in-person interaction with the HR-department even for basic questions.
New graduates can bring a fresh perspective on how things can be improved within the business and the HR department. Yet, HR isn't the field where you have the most opportunities to let your creativity shine.

This is the harsh reality. Based on the results using our model we think finding a traditional junior HR position in the next 10 years will be tough. Very tough.
This can be a case of if you can't fight them, join them. The traditional junior HR position might be dying, maybe turning into roles such as HR Tech Coordinator and AI Training Specialist. So a newly graduated HR person with technical literacy, a fresh knowledge about data privacy laws, and the use and limitations of AI, might find opportunities in a highly competitive market.
